Northampton - Alternative 'tourist' info !

This was created by

Marston.
Marston lives in Northampton with Ruddles and Theakston. Marston likes Real Ale, Aircraft and Railways and would like to tell you what's on offer in
Northampton.
REAL ALE: Northampton has a number of pubs selling the stuff, most notably The Malt Shovel in Bridge Street, the Racehorse on Abington Square and the Fitchet & Firkin in Bridge Street. We also have a number of Mansfield pubs, a Wetherspoon, a Banks', a Hogshead and various incarnations of the ScotCo conglomerate. Prices vary, as does quality and availability, from 1.60 to 2.40 per pint. If you want to know more about Real Ale visit the CAMRA website (see below), or e-mail me for local details - regular research is undertaken !!

AVIATION: Sywell airport is on the eastern edge of Northampton between the Kettering and Wellingborough Roads. Although it's a small club airfield it is home to an airworth Tiger Moth (or 2), Chipmunk, Harvard, Mustang (G-SUSY), Sea Fury and a newly restored D H Dominie 4 (military Dragon Rapide). Various small events happen throughout the year, I'll post dates if I get any.
We are also under the east - west military airlanes and regularly get transited by F-15C/E, Tornado, VC-10, Tristar, Galaxy and, at the moment 2 x B-1B's on their way to Yugoslavia (between 7pm and 9pm most nights).

If your holidaying/vacationing in this area we are within 1.5Hrs drive of Mildenhall/Lakenheath, Brize Norton, Wittering, Cottesmore, Luton AP, East Midlands AP, Birmingham AP, Stansted AP, and Heathrow (if you're lucky). Also within reach are Shuttleworth/Old Warden, Duxford, Bruntingthorpe and Hendon. Again, e-mail me for further info.

RAILWAYS: Nothampton is on a loop of the WCML between Wolverton and Rugby. It has regular srvices by Silverlink (class 321) and Connex (class 319). Most of the WCML fright uses the Northampton line, which is basically the slow line from Rugby southwards. Most freight is hauled by Railfreight or Freightliner 90's although 47's and 86's can be seen. Other freight haulage is by 31, 37, 56, 60 and 66. Freightliner 57's are also starting to appear. 92's are regularly dragged through by 90's. Due to the need to move light locos triple-headed trains are not uncommon, either on freight or light. On 26 April a northbound freightliner had 2x86 + 1x47. Light movements of 5 locos have been seen, as have most liveries - 6 on boring 321/322's alone. Please e-mail for further info.
